PS4 shooters aren’t exactly the easiest genre to wrap your head around. Not only is there a wealth of titles (both good and bad), but almost every game these days includes shooting villains and enemies one way or another. However, for all intents and purposes, we stuck to the PS4 shooters where shooting is a core part of gameplay.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

While WWII arguably has a better campaign, while Advanced Warfare’s multiplayer mode boasts a much deeper experience, there’s a reason why Black Ops III enjoys a more active multiplayer community — it strikes the perfect balance between the franchise’s signature blend of shooter action and traditional shooting using futuristic weapons.

Three years and two Call of Duty games after its release, Activision continues to provide support for Black Ops III, either via new map packs and zombie modes, and the player base are all the better for it.

Because of its “unfortunate” release date, a lot of people missed out on a shooter with a surprisingly immersive single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode that’s leaps and bounds better than that of its predecessors.

Titanfall 2 is that rare kind of game that you can enjoy playing alone or with friends. It also helps that there are no microtransactions, so you can get everything in the game from levelling up or completing challenges alone. Plus, free Downloadable Content (DLC). And if that’s not enough to convince you to pick up one of the most underrated PS4 shooters of this generation, maybe the fact that it earned the Best Online Multiplayer Award from the E3 Game Critics award back in 2016 will.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

Much like Titanfall 2 fell under the shadow of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division suffered from comparisons to Destiny 2, among others. But while many were quick to call the game dead just months into its release, Ubisoft has stuck by it, improving the game over the past two years, and it’s thriving, to say the least.

Whether you’re playing the game solo or as a squad, for the PVE or PVP experience, Tom Clancy’s The Division has a lot to offer for gamers of all preferences.

Overwatch

Forget about being one of the best arena shooters for the PS4, Overwatch is easily the top dog of the genre across all platforms.

Incorporating a mix of both MOBA and FPS elements, Overwatch pits two teams of six players each who can choose from a roster of more than twenty heroes against each other in a flashy and vibrant shooter that’s just as enjoyable to play for casual and hardcore FPS gamers.

Prey

Let’s take a break from the multiplayer-centric PS4 shooters for a moment and go with a game that doesn’t have a care for it.

Prey is a game devoid of any multiplayer element, but it provides a completely unique single-player experience that you wouldn’t really mind. Considered as a spiritual sequel to the 1994 classic shooter System Shock, the survival horror FPS deserves all of the praise that it has gotten since its 2017 release.

Offering a completely immersive main campaign, with tons of side-quests that could easily sidetrack you for hours, Prey may not be as action-packed as the other PS4 shooters on this list, but it’s easily one of the best in its class with room to spare.

DOOM

If Prey is the thinking man’s game of PS4 shooters, then DOOM is the game for those who want nothing but to shoot at everything at first sight.

A throwback to one of the best shooters of all time, the 2016 DOOM game takes all mechanics of the FPS games of the past and gives them a fresh coat of high graphics paint. The result? The perfect game for those who want non-stop action and violence.

Though the later levels can be a bit unforgiving for newbies, DOOM is an extremely easy game to get into. But, just like going to hell doesn’t take much effort, it’s getting yourself out of the game that’s going to take a lot of effort.

Far Cry 5

After an incredibly lacklustre showing with Far Cry: Primal, the franchise’s signature formula started showing signs of age. And though Far Cry 5 is probably not going to be the one game that will end up saving the franchise, it is easily one of the best PS4 shooters out right now.

First things first, though. If you expect Far Cry 5 to provide you with an emotionally gripping, deep gameplay experience, then walk away right now. Far Cry 5 isn’t a game-changer by any means. But, if you’re looking for the same Far Cry experience with a few notable improvements and advancements to its predecessors, then Far Cry 5 is an excellent must-buy — bad ending be damned.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is a good case in point of how to improve on an already good game The prequel, Destiny, was already considered one of the best PS4 shooters, and the fact that Destiny 2 is widely considered as the better game is a testament to how much time Bungie put in developing the game.

A game that offers a bit of everything for PVE and PVP players, as well as those who are a little bit of both, Destiny 2 is easy to recommend. Perhaps the only problem of the game is that it’s built to suck up a lot of your time if you’re even the slightest bit of a completionist.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Fortnite Battle Royale may not be the first Battle Royale game, and we’re certain that calling it a shooter is going to ruffle quite a few feathers, but we don’t care about that. We care about introducing the game to a group of people who’re looking for the best PS4 shooters out right now and Fortnite Battle Royale certainly is one of them.

While Battle Royale games are a dime-a-dozen these days and there’ll be more in the future, Fortnite Battle Royale sets itself apart by giving players the freedom to play the game their own way. The ingenious blending of the shooting and building mechanic is unlike any other offered on the market today and will ensure you nothing less than some time well spent.

Metro Exodus – 4A’s Metro games have always prided themselves on being one of the more unique shooters and Metro Exodus is looking like it won’t be any different. That is, other than the fact that you’re going to be spending more of your time above ground these days than in previous games. The Metro games have always had a way of making wastelands look so captivating and we can’t just wait what Metro Exodus has to offer come Fall of 2018.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – A sequel that is actually a prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot to live up to and judging from the trailers we’ve seen so far, it looks like it’s not going to disappoint once it hits store shelves on October 2018.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – We don’t exactly have any details regarding the game yet, but judging by how well received all the Black Ops games have been, the latest iteration should be just as good. The full reveal event on May 17 will tell a lot about what we should expect from Treyarch’s latest game.
