The dynamic when it comes to free PS4 games is changing. Whereas the word “free” used to mean getting a half-complete game or something riddled with micro-transactions and paywalls, we now have free offerings that we can truly enjoy on our eighth-generation Sony home consoles.

Fortnite, in particular, has proven that free PS4 games can be just as compelling and enjoyable as those that come with a hefty price tag.

Having said that, if you’re in the market for a new game and want to try something out without having to spend any cash at all, you’ll find below a list of some of the best free PS4 games you can play today.

The Best Free PS4 Games

Warframe

A third-person action shooter game with deep RPG mechanics, Warframe sounds awfully a lot like Destiny. But, mind you, while there are similarities, the free-to-play shooter actually has far more content than arguably both Destiny and Destiny 2 combined.

Just be careful, though. Warframe is a game of constant grinding. Much like other MMOs and titles from the Monster Hunter franchise, players will often find themselves working towards getting something bigger and better, a notion that might not sit too well with certain types of players.

But, if a never ending grind and constant looting is your sort of thing, then you’ll feel right at home in Warframe.

Brawlhalla

“Inspired” by the more popular Super Smash Bros titles, Brawlhalla is a free-to-play fighting game that sports many similar features to Nintendo’s fighting game champion, including the ability for as many as eight players to fight and knock each other off of a small floating stage.

We’ll leave you to argue whether or not it’s a rip-off. Just know that since Super Smash Bros isn’t technically available on the PlayStation 4, the closest you can get to it is Brawlhalla, so you might just want to let it pass.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

Life is Strange was a huge hit for an episodic adventure game, which is why it got a sequel in Life is Strange 2. However, since both don’t come for free, you’ve got a pretty good reason for missing out on such an amazing game.

Just don’t try to use the same excuse for not having tried out The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit though.

A free game that’s very similar to Life is Strange in gameplay, this game will take you on a trip inside the mind of a seven-year-old boy named Chris, who is just an absolutely adorable person. Although the entire trip likely won’t take you longer than two hours, it’s time well spent, especially since it’s free.

Hitman

This sandbox re-imagining and reboot of the iconic assassin was met with a lot of skepticism prior to its release, but once 2016’s Hitman hit the market, everyone was all praise.

So, when IO Interactive made a portion of the game available for free, you’d best bet that the sales only increased as gamers couldn’t help but buy the entire game after trying it out.

You could be next.

While the first two missions of the full game isn’t a lot, it’s plenty enough to tide you by and make you decide whether or not Hitman is worth a full purchase. But, then again, if you’re smart and patient enough, you won’t even have to buy the game at all, as IO Interactive has been known for making certain missions of the game available for free throughout the year, so you could very well end up playing the entire game absolutely for free.

As of the best sandbox/stealth titles in recent years, you’ll be missing a whole lot if you don’t at least give Hitman a try.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

A good card game on console is hard to come by, so it’s understandable if you’re not a total believer of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. But, considering it’s one of the few totally free PS4 games on the market, you might as well give it a try.

If you do, then you’d be thanking yourself that you did.

CD Projekt Red definitely did not skimp on making this free offering. It’s made with the same quality and dedication that you’d see from The Witcher games, which means you’d best expect to lose hours of your time to the game, especially if you are a fan of card games.

If nothing else, Gwent is a good excuse for you to jump back in on the world of The Witcher.

H1Z1

In case you didn’t know, H1z1 was the title that popularized the battle royale genre. It’s true. Feel free to look that up. But, for a lot of valid reasons, it didn’t just blow up as big as compared to its more modern contemporaries. Even so, it’s still a game well worth playing, especially on the PS4, where the tinkered version of the PC game has been made to better suit the controls on the console.

A rather intuitive game that literally anyone can pick up and play but with a high skill ceiling, H1z1 is easily one of the best free PS4 games out right now.

Just don’t mind the microtransactions. Although you’re free to buy them yourself, you can unlock majority of it simply just by playing the game.

Crossout

Speaking of microtransactions, skip Crossout if you’re allergic to it. This game is littered with them. But, if all you are after is a game that can help you scratch that Twisted Metal itch, then Crossout should definitely be on top of your list.

A multiplayer car combat game that lets you partake in sheer vehicular mayhem, Crossout will allow you to live out all of your Mad Max fantasies, and then some. Just make it a point to avoid playing it competitively, or else you’ll end up spending way too much money on the game before you know it.

World of Tanks

If Crossout isn’t scratching that vehicular mayhem itch hard enough, then you might want to try out World of Tanks instead.

Just as money-hungry as Crossout, this PVP game featuring old-school tanks has enjoyed a strong following since launching on the PC nearly a decade ago in 2011, and for good reason — it’s fun to blow stuff up. Although, it probably doesn’t hurt that Wargaming continues to push out new content every now and then.

While it’s hard to enjoy World of Tanks without spending a modest amount of money, it’s a game that’s arguably worth spending on if you like blasting one tank after another.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Does this even come as a surprise? Of course Fortnite: Battle Royale will find its way into a list of all of the free PS4 games that you absolutely should try out.

Why wouldn’t it?

Seriously, why not? For all the hate that the game seems to receive, it’s easily the most popular of all Battle Royale games, and with room to spare. Backed by a company intent on turning the game into a legitimate esport, it’s clear that Fortnite: Battle Royale, whether you like it or not, is hear to stay.

As for the game itself, Fortnite: Battle Royale is completely free to play. You download, jump in, play a game, and that’s it. You’re always going to be on equal footing with other players, regardless of how much more powerful they may seem to be because of their bizarre costumes and other whatnot.

Fallout Shelter

After years of success on mobile devices, Bethesda finally listened to the community and took to E3 to announce that Fallout Shelter will be available for free on the PlayStation 4 (as well as the Nintendo Switch).

Right at that moment, everyone knew that Fallout Shelter would become one of the best free PS4 games out there.

A spin-off of the Fallout franchise, Fallout Shelter is extremely expansive for a mobile game. Just as you would expect the kind of depth from its RPG counterparts, you’ll find that the developers put in the same kind of dedication to develop content for the game. In fact, you wouldn’t even notice that it was a mobile game first. The transition was just that natural.

Of course, as with other free PS4 games, Fallout Shelter does have micro-transactions. Luckily, you don’t have to use them. So long as you can remain patient, this is a completely free game that will have you overseeing your underground commune and living out your dreams of becoming a post-apocalyptic dictator in no time.
