GTA 6 running on Xbox Series X and Series S on November 19, 2026

Can You Play GTA 6 on Xbox Series S and Series X?

If you own an Xbox and you have watched the Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) hype roll out over the past year, you would be forgiven for feeling left out. Almost every trailer, every showcase and every bit of marketing has pointed at the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 5 Pro in particular. The one-sided spotlight hmay have left you wondering and asking, “is GTA 6 even coming to Xbox and if it is, can the Series S actually run it?”

The short answer is “yes.” GTA 6 launches on Xbox Series X and Series S on November 19, 2026, the same day it hits the PS5. The Series S is a supported console, so it will run the game out of the box. What changes between the Xbox models is how the game looks and performs, not whether it works at all and that is the part worth understanding before launch.

Is GTA 6 Actually Coming to Xbox?

Yes. Rockstar Games lists GTA 6 for Xbox Series X and Series S with a November 19 release, right alongside the PS5 version. There is no Xbox delay and no cut-down Xbox edition. The confusion is understandable, because Sony holds a marketing partnership that put PlayStation front and centre through most of the campaign, but a marketing deal is not an exclusivity deal. Xbox players get the same game on the same day.

The one hard line Rockstar Games has drawn is generational. GTA 6 does not run on last-gen hardware, so the Xbox One and the PS4 are out entirely. If your Xbox is an Xbox One of any kind, this is the game that finally retires it. You need a current-generation console, which means a Series X or a Series S.

Can the Xbox Series S Run GTA 6?

This is the question causing the most anxiety, because the Series S is the cheapest current console and the one people assume gets left behind. It does not get left behind here. The Series S runs GTA 6 on launch day like every other current machine. The honest caveat is that it will get the weakest version of the game because it all comes down to raw hardware. The Series S carries roughly 4 teraflops of graphics power and 10 GB of memory, against the Series X with about 12 teraflops and 16 GB.

Digital Foundry, the usual authority on these types of tech-related breakdowns, expects GTA 6 to look all but identical on the base PS5 and the Series X while the Series S will “suffer” from certain compromises. It’s an informed expectation based on the specs and not a slight at all on the economically priced console.

On performance, the picture is clearer. Rockstar Games is targeting 30 fps on consoles, the Series S included and animation director Rob Nelson has said the console versions currently run at 30 fps. No 60 fps performance mode is confirmed on any console, so the Series S and Series X will get roughly the same performance as the PS5 and PS5 Pro.

If you have seen Microsoft advertise up to 120 fps on the Series S, that claim covers supported games in general and carries no promise for GTA 6.

Resolution is the real unknown here. Rockstar Games, Microsoft and Digital Foundry have published no Series S figure for the game. The base PS5 was measured at native 1440p in August gameplay footage and the Series S normally sits below that, so expect a lower number on Microsoft’s small console.

Why It Felt Like a PlayStation Game

None of this explains the lopsided marketing and the explanation is rather simple. Sony signed a promotional partnership with Rockstar Games, which is why the trailers carried PlayStation branding and the hands-on footage ran on Sony hardware. The PS5 Pro took most of the spotlight because it is the most powerful console Rockstar had to show and a showcase game sells better running on the best box in the room.

It is worth keeping that in perspective though that, as we’ve already mentioned, GTA 6 targets 30 fps everywhere, so the high-refresh showcase that sells the PS5 Pro is not actually in play for this particular game at launch. The marketing made PlayStation look like the only option. The reality is that a Series X sits right next to the base PS5 in the pecking order and both deliver the same GTA 6.

If you are genuinely torn between the two ecosystems, the current PS5 pricing is one half of that decision and our full PlayStation 5 launch guide covers that side in depth if you end up choosing Sony. For everyone already on Xbox, there is no reason to switch.

Getting Your Xbox Ready for Launch

Whichever Xbox you own, a little prep now saves a headache on the November 19. Storage is the first job. GTA 6 is reported to need around 210 GB and with the Series S carrying far less usable space than the Series X, a storage expansion card is close to essential on the smaller console, especially if you want to leave room for the eventual successor of Grand Theft Auto Online or if you want to jump in and see the current iteration of GTA Online. You’ll want to sort that out before launch rather than deleting half your library at midnight.

With that said, the editions are identical across platforms, so the choice between Standard and Ultimate is the same call Xbox and PlayStation players both make and our Standard versus Ultimate breakdown lays out what the extra money buys. The pre-order bonuses and the November 12 pre-load apply to Xbox exactly as they do to PS5.

Then there is the controller, the part you actually hold for every hour of this very long game. We build and upgrade Xbox pads as well as PlayStation ones and the full menu of controller upgrades covers the Series X, the Series S and the Elite Series 2. The upgrade that matters most for a game this size is the sticks, because a 100-hour open world is exactly where stock sticks start to wander. A set of drift-resistant sticks is the difference between a pad that lasts the whole of Vice City and one you are fighting halfway through.

So the worry was misplaced. GTA 6 runs on Xbox, the Series S included, on the same day as everywhere else. The marketing simply made it feel otherwise.
